Statement - Waverley Estate Redevelopment

Uniting NSW.ACT has been providing community health and aged care services in Waverley for over 100 years. We have a history of protecting and maintaining the Waverley Estate and its heritage features.

The War Memorial Hospital is an important building within the Waverley Estate that will always be preserved and respected and is not being redeveloped. Whilst the current plan allows for the expansion of hospital services in the future, this would take place in conjunction with NSW Health and be respectful of its heritage.

Plans for other parts of the Waverley Estate are at various stages of planning approval. The planning process is being carried out by Uniting NSW.ACT. We are committed to maintaining our ownership of the Estate and for the newly developed site to play an even greater role in meeting the needs of the local community.

Our plan for the Waverley Estate will see the precinct improved, with areas and non-heritage buildings around the Hospital redeveloped to create wonderful spaces for residents and the community that celebrate the rich heritage of the Vickery family’s vision. There will be:

• Residential aged care including an early onset dementia centre and day centre
• Retirement living with assisted living options with a menu of in-home care services
• Community facilities including a café, seniors’ gym, men’s shed, landscape zones and points of activation to encourage seamless links to the surrounding community
• Expanded heritage gardens
• Improved access to the Estate so locals can share the community facilities and enjoy the peaceful heritage gardens.

When completed, our plan for the Waverley Estate will include much needed affordable housing and other housing options for older Australians in the Waverley area, including those from the LGBTI community. This is in line with the Aged Care Royal Commission Recommendations, allowing older people to age in place, with amenities that will allow them to maintain their independence while giving them support and care in their own community, close to family and friends.

Our plan will see the environment and green spaces of the Waverley Estate shine and planned open spaces more available to the public. The design and heritage of the gardens have been important considerations and there are tight controls on heritage and maintaining canopy cover.

Uniting looks forward to creating a beautiful community asset at the Waverley Estate and welcoming you to enjoy its rich history.

/Ends
